Diwali is just round the corner on Nov 12 which th Diwali is just round the corner on Nov 12 which thankfully happens to be a weekend this year. For expat holidays are such, you celebrate when you get a day off.

And, as the festival draws close and lights and oil lamps 🪔 start appearing on the threshold of our home, neighbors get curious and sometimes engage in conversation about what might be happening. This month’s Dispatch is about such explanatory chats peppered with nostalgia for the multi-cultural, multi-religious secularism of our childhoods.

Some 15 years ago, on a walk around the Jamia Mill Some 15 years ago, on a walk around the Jamia Millia Islamia university campus in Delhi’s Okhla area, Kanika and I stumbled upon a huge tree near the community’s high school. From it were hanging large, pale green fruits, that got us curious and excited. Was it the Bael fruit/ Wood Apple, we wondered.
I had never seen Bael tree before. Bael was a somewhat common sight during summers in Bazaars and on thelas but never on the tree. This month’s #Dispatch talks about this wonder fruit and a delicious no-fuss #sharbat #recipe. It is not easy to find the fruit outside of the Indian #subcontinent, and that’s what makes us want this even more. Have you tried #Bael ka sharbat?

Meals with Papa Missed posting it yesterday, beca Meals with Papa
Missed posting it yesterday, because life 🤷‍♀️ but then again Father’s Day can be every day or whenever you get a chance. These are a few snippets of meals I enjoyed with my father earlier this summer when he spent time with us in #tucson

While families can drive each other crazy, bore each other with the same stories and anecdotes; they can also nurture, encourage and drive us forward. This is just one such example of my dad insisting we sit down to eat our meals at the table. Working from home, while convenient also means some rituals like dedicating time off-screen to just eat can get lost.

These meals were made in collaboration with papa. In fact he cooked some of the mains like the chhole which were eaten with rice and later with phulka/chapati, he also made the most delicious rajma I’d eaten in a long time and on another day made delicious aloo gobhi. And because it was already getting pretty hot then, I had begun making #roohafza nimbu paani for myself.

So while it can seem like a heavy lift to prepare three meals in a day, it puts things in perspective and helps slow our unnecessarily hastened pace.

Here’s hoping you and your loved ones, given or chosen, take the time to nurture and nourish each other on the daily.
